Ed Hamilton

SDTFS member and well known zoologist Ed Hamilton passed away over the Christmas holidays. Ed was a good friend to many of us and President of the San Diego Botanical Foundation.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, January 15th from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The service will be on the patio in the middle of the Floral Building in Balboa Park where we hold our San Diego Tropical Fish Society  monthly meetings. There will be light sandwiches, and attendees are asked to bring deserts to share.

Editor's Message

.As you look over the events for this year in the listing below I think you will agree with me that this is going to be a really big year for SDTFS. We already have a lot listed for early in the year, and there will still be more events lined up over the next couple of months.

In fact, I left out some of the smaller events that will occur, such as a meeting of the California Guppy Group on January 16th. if you are interested in attending it will be in Room 104, of the Floral Building directly across the patio from our normal monthly meeting room 101. It will start at 2:00 p.m., and be over about 5:00 p.m. There will be a small guppy show and an auction as well as planning for the big guppy event of the year, which you will find listed on April 16 and 17 below.

If you are interested we would be delighted to see you there.

A Few Words About this eBulletin, Software and the Monthly Email.

Publishing an eBulletin can be done in many ways. There are some interesting aspects to web publishing, and particularly to a web  based periodical. One of these aspects is that things can change very quickly in the computer world.

I use a program called Microsoft FrontPage to prepare the publication. However Microsoft no longer supports FrontPage, so at some point it is likely that we will have to move to different software. To get the publication actually up on to the web I use a program called WS_FTP. Microsoft Windows Vista does not support  the old software used in the Help menu in WS_FTP, so it also is getting old and we will need to change from that at sometime in the future.

Ever since we have been publishing I have used a program called Thunderbird to send out the notices each month that this eBulletin is up on the web and ready for you to read. A virus infected my computer this past month, with the result that I had to wipe my hard disk clean, and reinstall everything on it. As part of that process I moved to Gmail to send out the notice, so you may see a slightly different appearance in the email you may have received that the eBulletin is on line. But moving to Gmail offers some advantages over the old way, so that is good.

When I cleaned my hard disk I also lost all the names and email addresses to which I send that notice every month.  Fortunately, a very valuable SDTFS Board member Norman Brown maintains the member database, and he has sent me an Excel spreadsheet with the info for existing members, and even a few who may not have renewed yet.  However we may have lost a few names that were on the list I maintained that were not on the membership database. Going forward Norman and I are now on the same page with the member database. He will be sending me a whole new list each month, and I will not have to enter any email addresses myself.

So the situation is that existing members will have received the monthly email, from which you can get to this eBulletin. As most of you know, you also can simply go to the website, www.sandiegotropicalfish.com and reach the eBulletin on that site. If you hear anyone mention that they are not getting the monthly email, the solution is simple. Tell them to just pay their dues and give us their email address.
