The Salton Sea Trip is on. I talked with Ben Ivy today and he expects a temperature of 102 out there. I heard 103 on the news last night for today, so I think the heat will not be too bad. See below for more details. Charles Pratt |
Upcoming Events at SDTFS
September 27, 2008: Field Trip - Salton Sea Exploration - Yes, the trip is on. We will meet at the Murray Drive Park and Ride for car pooling, which is on Murray Drive right next to the Red Lobster parking lot just off Hwy 8 at Grossmont Center. It is right next to the freeway and across Murray Drive from the Walmart. Meet there before 10:00 a.m. and we will leave there at 10:00 a.m.
You will not need a fishing license as this is one of the two free fishing days California offers each year.
Bring nets, buckets, plastic bags etc if you are going to fish. Bring a pair of shoes to wear in the car or van and one or two more pair of old tennis shoes to wear into the water. Bring them in plastic bags so you can put them back into the bags to avoid messing up the floor of your car. Either wear or bring bathing suits or shorts you don't mind getting wet. Bring a towel, water and /or drinks. You will probably need a jacket by evening. We will stop for lunch in El Centro, probably at Pop Eyes Chicken on Imperial Avenue, then go up the far side of the Salton Sea stopping at three or more places along the way. We will probably come back though Julian and may stop at the Rong Branch Saloon or another restaurant for dinner. For more information phone Charles Pratt (619) 267-2236.
October 12, 2008: Charles Kacirek will talk about Rift Lake Cichlids, from his own experience collecting in Africa. Mr. Kacirek has many years of experience with tropical fish and has operated his own Florida tropical fish farm.
October 30, 2008: Annual Show Setup Thursday and
Friday nights. Show opens Saturday morning. Judging of Aurulis Barb Grow Out
Contest and small tank competition.
November 9, 2008: Fall Auction
December 14: Potluck, room 101 (Our normal
meeting room.) Single people one hot item, if two people one hot & one cold.
Awards/Elections.

Trichopsis pumilus, the Dwarf Croacking Gourami from Vietnam, Thailand and Sumatra |

Another Trichopsis pumilus. the color seems to vary a bit. It is a peaceful, gentle species. |

Nannostomus beckfordi, the Golden Pencilfish, from Guyana, lower Rio Negro, and central Amazon |

Farlowella or Twig catfish. I have been fond of this fish for a long time. I once had a spawning of them in a breeding group of seven fish. |

Another view of a Farlowella. I actually have three of those original fish still living. None of the young survived. It seemed they never started eating very well. |

Ghost Glass catfish |

Nematobrycon palmeri, the Emperor Tetra. From the west coast of Colombia this is a quiet peaceful fish that does well in a densely planted tank. |
