Salton Sea Field Trip

Date: Sunday,  October 22, 2006

Place: We will meet at the Murray Drive Park and Ride, which is just off Hwy 8 at Grossmont Center. It is right next to the freeway.  Meet there before 10:00 a.m. and we will leave there at 10:00 a.m.

You will need a fishing license if you are going to fish. Here are costs and the basic regulations. Licenses may be obtained at most sporting goods stores. Get your license in advance, we will not stop anywhere that will have them.

Resident Sport Fishing $ 34.90 Required for a resident to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptile in inland or ocean waters. Additional stamps and report cards are required for certain species and areas.
A One-day Sport Fishing License $ 11.30 Allows a resident or nonresident to take fish, mollusks, crustaceans, invertebrates, amphibians or reptiles in inland or ocean waters. Additional stamps or report cards are required for certain species or areas. One-day sport fishing licenses are exempt from the Ocean Enhancement Stamp requirement.

Bring nets, buckets etc if you are going to fish. We will stop for lunch in El Centro, probably at Pop Eyes Chicken on Imperial Avenue, then go up the far side of the Salton Sea stopping at three or more places along the way. We will probably come back though Julian and may stop at the Wrong Branch Saloon or another restaurant for dinner.

Rare fish appear to be rebounding

LAS VEGAS Federal wildlife officials say the population of Devil's Hole pupfish appears to be making a comeback. After an all-time low count in April of 38 pupfish in the water-filled limestone cave near Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, biologists counted 85 of the rare desert fish Sept. 23, officials announced Friday. Devil's Hole, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is the only place on Earth that pupfish are known to exist in the wild. The increased count means the fragile population appears to be growing two years after a mishap involving fish traps killed about one-third of the fish. It also comes two months after snails infested isolated reserve populations at a man-made habitat in the refuge and in a spring-fed concrete tank near Hoover Dam.

We would like to point out that, as most of you who went on our spring trip to Devil's Hole know there are about thirty species of pupfish, found in southern Nevada and California. The article above refers just to one species, The Devils Hole pupfish, Cyprinodon diabolis.
